S = Sonic Youth. More SY, because I feel like it. The sound quality on this one is aiight considering it's from over twenty years ago. Apparently this is an audience cassette recording, but it ain't too bad. All the faves (my faves) of the period are repped to the fullest... "White Cross" is hot rippin', "Star Power" is on, and the closer, "Expressway", is damn near perfect. "I Love Her All the Time" still gives me the, I don't want to say the creeps, but... the creeps. This period in SY chronology has them playing songs mostly off of EVOL, which I will rank near the top of my SY album list, if not at the top. That record played quite an instrumental role in my development as a teenager, at least as far as musical interests are concerned. The feeling that something was "wrong" that dripped from the earliest material is still crusted on the songs, but is starting to flake off and give way to the new skin shown on Sister and Daydream. Killer show from a killer band at a legendary venue.

Sonic Youth - Moist Vagina

Here's Sonic Youth's version of one of Nirvana's greatest b-sides, "Moist Vagina" (also known, to the prudes, as "MV"), as a b-side itself on SY's "Sunday" single (which, by the way was the only single off of A Thousand Leaves). What makes this cover even more unsettling is the fact that Kim is singing, giving it an unexpected reversal of gender... odd.

This is the first show on the short tour SY embarked upon for the fourth installment of the SYR series, Goodbye 20th Century, a record of covers of 20th Century avante garde composers. As you can probably guess, this is the more "out there" Sonic Youth, so don't expect to hear "Tom Violence" (although the set is followed up with an encore of "NYC Ghosts and Flowers"). Cool show with lots of guests, in addition to Jim O'Rourke. Richard Edson, SY's original drummer, makes an appearance on "She Is Not Alone", and William Winant and Christian Fennesz both do their thing.

Sonic Youth visit Gibby Haynes

Presented for your discriminating consideration are two files containing one and a half hours of Butthole Surfers vet Gibby Haynes' radio show circa 1994 on an Austin, TX "new rock alternative" station. His honored guests for the evening are Thurston, Lee and Steve of Sonic Youth doing promo for Lollapalooza. The broadcast here includes the Gibby picked tunes and Mr. Haynes talking over frustrated callers, acid-drenched insults flying right over their heads until he hangs up on them. SY plays along, antics ensue.

Live at the Easter Festival, Philipshalle in Dusseldorf, Germany. My personal favorite bootleg from the Washing Machine era, this show has been booted several times, under various names. This show contains a wicked 20+ minute version of "The Diamond Sea", a bitchin' version of "Becuz" and the DDN opener "Teenage Riot" to kick things off. Kim's vocals are absolutely on point, making this one of the best SY shows I've heard from the mid-nineties. Thanks to Andrei for noticing the tracklisting was incorrect. If you had previously D/L'd this show, the correct song order is listed above. Sorry... wasn't paying attention.

I had recently posted this to the SY forums to fill a request. This is the end of Sonic Youth's set 11.23.2002 in Providence, Rhode Island. SY plays a rather ripping version of "Disconnection Notice", then launches in to the Sister classic, "White Cross". Toward the end of the song, Lightning Bolt begins their set (cue the spazzy guitar freakout), creating a mini-jam. The third track is a LB song for which I do not have the title.

Thurston Moore - Kapotte Muziek

This is an interesting little package. A 5" CD with the program not reaching the furthest inch of the disc... paperboard sleeve, well done. This is Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth's installment in Korm Plastics' Kapotte Muziek series, which started as a series of 7" records then moved to the miniCD format. Previous instalments included Toshiya Tsunoda, Troum, Illusion of Safety and Stephan Mathieu.
